8:00-8:15 Registration
8:15-10:15 Medical Identity Theft: A Crime with Life-Threatening Consequences for the Victim & Red Flag Rule (CEU 2.0)
Medical identity theft is reportedly one of the fastest growing areas of white-collar crime and can cost healthcare organizations hundreds of thousands of dollars. Does your facility know how to investigate potential cases of identity theft? Can you report instances to law enforcement without violating HIPAA? How do you retain medical information when you don’t know the true identity of the patient?
o Sample policies for conducting an investigation
o Operational solutions when information does not belong in the “victim’s” medical record but the facility must retain the information
o Tools and guidance for interacting with law enforcement throughout the criminal investigation
10:15-10:30 Break
10:30-12:00 Responding to Government Inquiries (CEU 1.5)
Civil and Criminal False Claims Act enforcement is increasing along with enforcement of the multitude of laws, rules and regulations that govern health care today. Does your facility know how and when to respond to inquiries from government investigators? What do you do when someone shows up at the facility with a subpoena or even worse, a search warrant? Do you even know what these documents look like?
o The flow of a fraud investigation
o How your initial response to government inquiries can impact the entire investigation
o When and how to “wave the white flag”
12:00-1:00 Lunch Provided
1:00-2:45 Conducting a Facility-Wide Risk Assessment (CEU 1.75)
Know your risks: Based on changes in the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, risk assessments are no longer a recommendation but rather a requirement. Virginia will provide education on why risk assessments are necessary, what a risk assessment should accomplish and how to conduct a risk assessment. (Provide tools that individuals can take back to their facility and conduct their own internal risk assessment).
2:45-3:00 Break
3:00-4:30 Auditing and Monitoring Your Compliance Program (CEU 1.5)
The complexity of today’s healthcare organizations makes it impossible to use a “cookie cutter” compliance program. Every entity must implement a compliance program that fits within its unique service lines and corporate culture. However, one thing that is clear is that a compliance program cannot simply consist of policies and procedures that sit on a shelf. Auditing and monitoring is a key element of every compliance program. This class will include:
o Principles and techniques utilized by the OIG in conducting compliance program reviews and audits.
o Essential elements of a compliance audit.
o Processes for identifying compliance risks and conducting and annual risk assessment.
o Working papers for compliance program audits and audit reports.
